Bertha Morton Obituary

Wednesday, April 9, 2025, God welcomed His angels to honor our beloved matriarch and soldier, Mother Bertha Chiles Morton. Born June 27, 1940, to the late Mack Rouse and Mary Chiles Kelly.

Bertha’s spirit will forever inspire us. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Pressley Morton; her two sons, Johnny Eugene Chiles (Apostle Deborah Chiles) and Barry O’keith Morton; and her two sisters Precious Hill and Dot Chiles.

Bertha received her education at JS Wright High School and was employed at Calvin Klein Manufacturing for thirty years before retiring in the early 2000s. After retirement, Bertha cared for her grandchildren while their parents worked. She also cared for children outside of the family, many whom soon became like family to her. Her Grandchildren-now grown and with families of their own loved themselves some “Granny Bert.” Known for her culinary skills, Bertha filled her home with love through delicious Sunday meals, leaving an enduring legacy with her sweet iced tea. At an early age, Bertha accepted our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, joining Millway Baptist Church in Troy, SC. In her later years, she became a member of New Jerusalem Deliverance Temple under the leadership of the late Pastor George and Ethel Bates, where she served faithfully as a doorkeeper, pulpit aide, and mother of the church. Bertha’a life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to God and His people. A true woman of God, she demonstrated her faithfulness at The Kingdom Life Training Center, under the guidance of the late Apostle Johnny Chiles and Deborah Chiles. later, at the helm of Pastor Joshua C. Chiles.

Mother Bertha Chiles Morton was an inspiration to all who knew her, embodying a dedicated and loving spirit that is hard to describe. Her unconditional love for her family and friends leaves a lasting legacy.

She is survived by her children, Beverly (Marshall) Thomas and Patrick (Hope) Morton, both of Abbeville, SC, along with her sister, Evangelist Diane Chiles, of Abbeville, SC. Bertha’s memory is cherished by her ten grandchildren, including two who were raised in the home; Latisha Lomax and Shamario Morton, Pastor Joshua (Jenae) Chiles, Michael Butler, Christopher Butler, Jaylin Butler, Emmanuel Belton, Travious (Gabby) Morton, D’Aarok Morton, and Shay Lomax. Two nieces, Mary Louise Rayford and Fannie Hill. Spiritual daughters, Dorothy (Eddie) Latham, Beverly White, and Paula (JB) Brown. Her godson, Jacob Latham, along with twenty-one great-grands, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of other family and friends that will carry her memory forward, forever touched by her love. At 4:20 PM on April 9, 2025, Bertha’s assignment was completed, answering the call of the Lord as a good and faithful servant after 84 years. Leaving behind her favorite quote, “God is A Keeper.”
