Darrell Aiken Obituary

Darrell Earl Aiken, 64 of 113 Wingfield Street, Abbeville SC was known as Boom-Boom and Dal to his family and many friends. He was born on June 16, 1961 and was the youngest son of the late Lucille Bryson Aiken and Andrew Lewis Aiken, Sr.

As a youth, Darrell attended and became a member of Long Cane AME church. He graduated from Abbeville High School, class of 1979, with bragging rights. Known for his athletic abilities in many sports, Dal was named most valuable offensive player in 1972 which was a claim to fame and often ended many discussions with his friends and colleagues of his greatness. Dal said when someone tried to tackle him, they got hit with the Boom-Boom.

Darrell was gainfully employed at Reelco for 20+ years. He held many demanding positions. It was there that he coined the phrase, “The Main thang, don’t panic!”. If you were blessed enough to be in his presence for more than five minutes, you were guaranteed a good laugh from his quick wit, an update on worldly events, or a pre-post-game review update.

Darrell entered into his eternal rest peacefully on Tuesday, September 2nd at Aiken Regional Medical Center with his sister, Cal (the one he swore he would always protect) and godsister Evelyn Hunter at his side. Left to cherish Darrell’s memories are his son, Ronald Cornelius Brown (Veronica “Bunny” Brown, mother) of Abbeville SC; four sisters, Teresa Harvard of Augusta GA, Cynthia Jackson and Breunna Phelps of Greenwood SC, Caroline Aiken-McGee of Lithonia GA; one sister-in-law, Suzette Aiken of Charleston SC; godmother Georgia Mae Hunter Finley and godsisters Linda Hunter of Abbeville SC and Evelyn Hunter of Stamford CT and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins to reflect fondly on Boom-Boom.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew Aiken Jr., Charles Pressley, and Reverend Kenneth Lee Aiken.
