James Oliver DeVeaux

James Oliver DeVeaux, affectionately known as Gene or Doc to his friends, was born on September 20, 1955, in McCormick, South Carolina. He peacefully departed this life on November 11, 2025, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie DeVaux Sr. and Mrs. Maggie Louise DeVaux and four brothers: Mr. Phillip DeVaux, Mr. George A. DeVaux, Mr. Willie DeVaux Jr. and Mr. Ernest Cade.

Gene was educated in the McCormick County School System and proudly graduated from McCormick High School. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and was recognized as a Rifle Expert. Following his active duty, he continued his service in the National Guard for several years.

A dedicated and skilled worker, Gene built a long career as a concrete mason. He worked for Fluor Daniels Construction Company for 16 years, as well as with other construction firms over the course of his career. His strong work ethic, skilled hands, and easygoing spirit made him a valued colleague and friend on every job site.

A member of Mt. Zion AME Church in McCormick, SC, Gene lived a life rooted in faith, compassion, and service to others. He was a loving man who cared deeply for his family and friends—always ready to lend a helping hand, share a laugh, or offer words of encouragement. Gene’s kind heart and steady presence made a lasting impact on everyone who crossed his path.

He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Latoya (Tacia) DeVeaux of Myrtle Beach, SC, Setarra (Ronnie) Robinson of Mint Hill, NC, and Abriel Brown of Winston-Salem, NC; two grandchildren: Michael Adams and Camarra Monae; and five siblings: Mr. Joe M. (Marquetta) DeVaux of Columbus, OH, Mr. Archie (Fritzella) DeVaux of Irmo, SC, Mr. Thomas L. (Val) DeVaux of Augusta, GA, Mrs. Georgia D. Hampton of Augusta, GA and Ms. Eula DeVaux of Greenville, SC. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who love and adore him dearly.  He is also fondly remembered by his former wife and lifelong friend, Carolyn Turner DeVeaux, mother of his daughters Latoya and Setarra.

The family invites you to join them in remembering a man whose life was defined by hard work, loyalty, laughter and unconditional love. Though Gene will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
